Clive Palmer and QNI Resources splash out $10,000 for local swimmers

Clive Palmer and QNI Resources have splashed out $10,000 for local swimmers, taking donations to North Queensland sporting and community causes to more than $20 million since 2010.

The donation made to Townsville Tiger Sharks Swimming Club today will be spent on a new computer, shade tent and other equipment allowing it to continue keeping costs as low as possible for members while providing a healthy, active environment for local swimmers to achieve their full potential.

Club president Renaye Bell said the donation was greatly appreciated.

“The Townsville Tiger Sharks believe swimming is part of a healthy, active lifestyle and therefore has a responsibility to provide a healthy environment for every swimmer to grow within,’’ Renaye said.

“We are very grateful for this kind donation from Clive Palmer and QNI Resources so we can continue the development of future champions as well as foster the well-being of all swimmers including the younger generation and contribute to creating a better future for our region,’’ she said.

The presentation follows a donation of $75,000 to Townsville Gymnastics last week and brings total donations made to the North Queensland community by QNI Resources to $20million since 2010, with the Australian Volunteer Coastguard, Corcoran Park Netball Association, Townsville City Netball Association, NQ Football Inc, Townsville Basketball, Townsville Eagles AFL, Western Lions Junior Rugby, Townsville PCYC and Townsville Community Music just some of the groups that have also benefited.

QNI Resources Chairman Clive Palmer said the company was committed to giving back to the North Queensland community.

“We are very happy to support this excellent Townsville organisation which does such a great job providing a healthy, supportive environment so young swimmers can realise their dreams,’’ Mr Palmer said.

“QNI Resources takes great pride in assisting worthy grass-roots causes such as this which is why is so important that the refinery returns to operation as soon as possible so we can continue to help the local community reach its full potential.

“We want to make Townsville great again. Let’s unite and be better,’’ Mr Palmer said.
