How Long Will This Electoral Farce Continue: Palmer

Media release

Federal leader of the Palmer United Party, Clive Palmer, has asked how long the electoral farce will continue in Fairfax with the AEC still not settling on a result nearly a month after polling day.

Mr Palmer has renewed his call for an urgent review of Australia’s voting system, saying the AEC was archaic, out of touch and lacked proper transparency.

“It’s been nearly four weeks since the people spoke in Fairfax and still they are waiting on an outcome,’’ Mr Palmer said.

“It shows what is wrong with the system when the AEC is so unsure about what is happening in Fairfax, they have to send two senior apparatchiks from Canberra to oversee counting.

“We continue to see different results from this unfair and outdated system which makes a mockery of the democratic process.

“How many members of parliament are currently in Canberra who shouldn’t be there?

“You simply wouldn’t know with the system the way it is at the moment.

“A full review of Australia’s voting system is required – our right to a transparent democracy demands it,’’ he said.

Mr Palmer says the voting system could be improved by removing bias towards the major parties and implementing more measures to reduce fraud like ensuring voters registered with proper identification and doing away with the antiquated pencil and paper system.
