Canning Sick of GST Rip Off: Clive Palmer

Media release

The upcoming Canning by-election was essentially a vote on Tony Abbott’s planned increases to the GST, federal leader of the Palmer United Party, Clive Palmer, said today.

“It is no secret that the Abbott Government wants to raise the GST from 10 per cent to 15 per cent meaning once again Western Australia will be badly disadvantaged as most of the revenue raised heads to the eastern seaboard.

“The people of Canning will not stand for this GST rip off any longer. They are sick and tired of GST collected in WA propping up the eastern states and demand a fair go,’’ he said.

Mr Palmer said approximately 4 per cent of the 5 per cent rise in GST would disappear from WA.

“Voters in Canning understand that the major parties have been responsible for sending billions of dollars of WA GST revenue to Sydney and Melbourne and they are ready to send a clear message on polling day.

“After some successful years, WA is now struggling economically having lost its AAA credit rating under Colin Barnett. It cannot afford the continued impost of an unjust GST system.

“This Government should be held to account and Palmer United is the only party that has continually stood up for WA when it comes to the GST.

“The Canning by-election will essentially be a referendum on any GST increase and the chance to send a clear message to the Government that it’s time WA received its fair share,” Mr Palmer said.

“Vote for the Palmer United Party – the only party standing up for the rights of WA.”

Clive Palmer will announce the Palmer United Party candidate for the Canning by-election at a press conference at the Hyatt Regency Perth at 11:30AM on Friday, August 21.
