Sunshine Coast Needs International Airport: Palmer

Federal Member for Fairfax

Media release

Federal leader of the Palmer United Party and Member for Fairfax, Clive Palmer, has called on the Abbott Government to urgently provide funding for a new runway at Sunshine Coast Airport to accommodate international flights from Asia.

Mr Palmer said creating an international airport would help give the Sunshine Coast economy the boost it so desperately needed.

“The Sunshine Coast is experiencing a substantial lack of jobs, causing high unemployment and forcing large numbers of contractors and other workers to travel to Brisbane each day for work,’’ he said.

“The Federal Government needs to act now to stimulate the region and create more jobs so that families have a secure future.

“Stimulus can be best achieved by building a new runway at Maroochydore Airport so that the Sunshine Coast can attract thousands of visitors from Asia.

“We must be able to offer Asian travellers the opportunity to fly direct to the Sunshine Coast,’’ he said.
