PPL Dead in the Water: Clive Palmer

Federal Member for Fairfax

Media release

The federal leader of the Palmer United Party and Member for Fairfax, Clive Palmer, says the Abbott Government is like an ostrich with its head in the sand when it comes to the Paid Parental Leave (PPL) scheme.

Mr Palmer said while the Palmer United Party holds the balance of power in the Senate the PPL will not pass.

“There will be no PPL, it’s simply inequitable,” Mr Palmer said.

“It has the potential to disadvantage hard-working mothers living in rural Australia as well as lower income earning women, while highly paid mothers in industries such as law and living in suburbia will benefit.

“Why should one group of highly paid mums get one amount and another set of mums on lower-income not get anything? It’s just wrong.”

Mr Palmer said despite numerous reports, the Government has not discussed the PPL with him.

“No one has sat down and spoken to me and provided any details on the scheme,” he said.

“The PPL is dead in the water and the Palmer United Party will not let it pass the Senate.

“The Palmer United Party has a much better policy and we will be pushing for this to be adopted.”
