Proposed Amendments to Carbon Tax Repeal

Federal Member for Fairfax

Following a meeting with former United States Vice-President Al Gore, the federal leader of the Palmer United Party and Member for Fairfax Clive Palmer says he will recommend amendments to the carbon tax repeal legislation to benefit the lives of Australians.

Mr Palmer said Vice-President Gore, the chairman of The Climate Reality Project, had convinced him to further consider the impact of greenhouse emissions on the planet and the need for a global solution.

“Al Gore is a great leader who has worked relentlessly to save this planet from environmental disaster,” he said.

“Climate change is a global problem and therefore it must have a global solution.”

Mr Palmer said in keeping with his party’s promises to the Australian people at the last election, the Palmer United Party senators would vote to abolish the carbon tax.

“In doing so, our senators will move an amendment to ensure the removal of the carbon tax requires all producers of energy in this country to pass on to all consumers of energy, the resultant savings of its repeal,” he said.

“This would go beyond government provisions which only give the ACCC enhanced monitoring arrangements.

“The Palmer United Party Amendments will provide an enforcement mechanism to ensure the generators and then the retailers are required by law to pass on the full benchmarked electricity and gas price falls associated with the carbon tax repeal.

Mr Palmer also foreshadowed the establishment of an emissions trading scheme, which would operate between China, the United States, the European Union, Japan and Korea to address these global challenges.

“We need to ensure the jobs and enterprises of all Australians will not be disadvantaged and by voting to abolish the carbon tax our senators will ensure Australian industries are more competitive and the lives of its people are more manageable.”
