Newman must reinstate crime committee: Palmer

Media release

Federal leader of the Palmer United Party and federal member for Fairfax Clive Palmer has called upon Queensland Premier Campbell Newman to reinstate a parliamentary committee he sacked for questioning the independence of the Crime and Misconduct Commission.

Mr Palmer said Premier Newman’s decision to disband the Parliamentary Crime and Misconduct Committee was an abuse of power.

“Premier Newman’s act is a contempt of Parliament and is more disturbing given that the committee members had expressed the view that the chairman of the CMC Dr Ken Levy had acted in breach of criminal law.”

“The Premier has taken sides in the debate confirming the CMC is under his direction and not under the administration of Parliament to act independently as a watchdog of government.”

“CMC has gone from watchdog to a gestapo type of operation.

“The Premier will now use the CMC to intimidate citizens. This is a black day for Queenslanders.”

“Let’s face it this is not the act of a rational person,” Mr Palmer said.
