HECS Holding Australia’s Smartest Minds Back: Clive Palmer

Federal Member for Fairfax

Media release

Palmer United Party federal leader and Member for Fairfax, Clive Palmer says the abolition of HECS would be an important step forward in developing a smarter Australia.

Mr Palmer is calling for an end to the HECS system which he says is currently burdening the nation’s cleverest minds with mountains of debt.

“We should be doing everything we can to encourage our smartest Australians to pursue tertiary education and take this great country forward, rather than put barriers in their way such as higher fees and HECS,’’ he said.

“I would like to see the return to a free university system for Australian students so everybody can have the same dreams and aspirations about bettering themselves and this nation, regardless of their circumstances.”

Mr Palmer said Australia lost more than it gained by imposing ongoing debt on tertiary graduates.

“The HECS system stifles our best thinkers by burying them in debt,’’ he said.
